National HBPA Summer Convention Speaker Forums Set

Lexington, KY., Monday, June 7, 2010 – The National HBPA will hold its 2010 summer convention at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota from July 21-25, 2010. The convention will be hosted by the Minnesota HBPA and held in conjunction with the 2010 Claiming Crown scheduled for Saturday, July 24 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota.

The National HBPA 2010 Summer Convention will kick off on Wednesday, July 21 with registration and a welcome cocktail party. Thursday and Friday will feature a number of informative panels and HBPA committee meetings, followed by the Claiming Crown Cocktail Party at Canterbury Park on Friday evening.

Thursday, July 22 (9:00–11:00 a.m.) – Technology: “Technology and Horsemen: The New Frontier”: From IPhone applications, to specialized software the tools available to horsemen are expanding exponentially. How do we adapt new technology to make our racing and breeding businesses, and the industry as a whole, more successful?

Moderator: Ron Maus, President, Washington HBPA, Founding Member MRW Advisory, LLC

Thursday, July 22 (2:00–4:00 p.m.) – Regulation: “The Interstate Racing and Wagering Compact and Horsemen – To Be Feared or Embraced?”: U.S. Racing’s rule-making system needs work. Horsemen need to count on a structured rule-making process whose goal is reasonable uniformity through consensus building and which prevents runaway or unilateral regulation – is an interstate compact the answer?

Friday, July 23 (10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.) – Economics: "The Future of Horse Racing and the Horse Race Wagering Product": An exploration of existing financial trends in wagering and reliance on alternative gaming as a short term strategy. This panel will also examine takeout vs. other games of skill; the risk/reward of new wagering products; Attracting new players and the pros and cons of our existing industry.

Friday, July 23 (1:30–4:00 p.m.) – Medication: “Bute - 5 mcg….To be or not to be”: An in-depth look at new pre-race inspection policies and related changes to U.S. racing’s 30 year old policy governing commonly used therapeutic medications.

“We are still looking for proponents of the Bute change to add to the panel,” said Kent Stirling, Chair of the NHBPA Medication Committee.

On Saturday morning, the National HBPA's Executive Committee will meet. That afternoon convention attendees will have the opportunity to attend Claiming Crown XII at Canterbury Park. The National HBPA will conclude its summer convention on Sunday, July 25 with a meet of its full Board of Directors.

Registration for the convention is $350.00 per person for HBPA members and their significant others through June 24. After June 24, registration is $375.00 per person. Cancellations will be accepted until June 29 with a $50.00 fee. No refunds after June 30.
